Why Shrimp Fail Their Molts — And How the Right Calcium Tablet Actually Fixes It

The problem most shrimp keepers do not see coming

A shrimp that fails a molt does not look like a calcium problem. It looks like bad water quality, a disease, a temperature spike, or just bad luck. The shrimp gets stuck halfway out of its old shell, exhausts itself trying to break free, and usually does not make it. Keepers test their parameters, find nothing obviously wrong, and move on. It happens again a few weeks later with another shrimp.

The pattern is calcium deficiency, and it shows up in tanks across every experience level. Standard water testing kits do not measure calcium directly. GH tells you something about overall mineral hardness, but a tank can read perfectly fine on GH while still being short on the specific calcium availability that shrimp need during a molt. The two are related but not the same thing.

Molting is physically demanding in a way that is easy to underestimate. A shrimp must absorb enough calcium in the days before a shed to build an entirely new exoskeleton after the old one comes off. That window — the hours immediately following a molt when the new shell is soft and forming — is when calcium demand peaks and when a deficiency hits hardest. A shrimp that cannot source enough calcium from its diet during that period is at serious risk every single molt, regardless of how clean the water is.

The molt failure is the last thing you see. The calcium shortage started weeks before.

Snails face the same problem from a different angle. A mystery snail with a pitting, eroding, or thinning shell is pulling calcium from its own shell to meet metabolic demands because the tank is not supplying enough through food and water. Why delivering calcium alone is only half the equation

In a snail-heavy tank, or one where shell quality has already been a concern, adding an extra tablet every few feedings accounts for the increased demand.

Remove anything uneaten after 24 hours. A tablet that has been grazed on for a full day will usually be significantly smaller than when it went in, but whatever remains should come out before it begins breaking down in a way that affects water quality. In an active colony with a healthy feeding response there is typically nothing left to remove.

During active molting periods

If molting activity spikes — more empty shells than usual, shrimp hiding more, or a breeding surge in the colony — increase feeding frequency to every other day for a couple of weeks. Calcium demand is higher during active molting than at baseline. Staying ahead of that demand is easier than responding after a failed molt has already occurred.

Will Shrimp Bites affect my water parameters?

No. Shrimp Bites do not affect pH, KH, or GH. If you are managing precise water chemistry for caridina shrimp or a sensitive planted setup, you can feed Shrimp Bites without any concern about parameter drift.

Are they safe for fish in a community tank?

My shrimp are not going to the tablet. What should I do?

A new colony or a very small group may take a few feeding sessions to establish the habit. Shrimp that are being overfed on other foods will show less interest — try offering the tablet when the tank has had nothing for a day. If the colony is small, break the tablet in half and offer a smaller piece. In most established tanks with a healthy colony, shrimp find and begin working the tablet within minutes of it hitting the substrate.

Can I use these in a caridina tank?

Yes. The tablet does not affect GH or KH, which makes it safe for caridina setups where parameter stability is critical. Crystal red, Taiwan bee, and other caridina variants have the same calcium requirements during molting as neocaridina — in some cases higher given how demanding their water conditions already are. How is this different from adding cuttlebone to the tank?

Cuttlebone is a common low-cost calcium source and it does contribute something — it dissolves slowly and passively adds calcium to the water column over time.
