Place one leaf directly into the tank and it begins releasing tannins into the water within the first few hours. Over the following days it softens and starts to break down, and the surface gradually becomes covered in biofilm — a thin natural layer of microorganisms that shrimp will graze on continuously throughout the day. By the time the leaf has fully decomposed it will have provided weeks of passive enrichment without any effort on your part. The leaves can be used whole as a large floor covering or broken into smaller sections to spread across different areas of the tank. In a shrimp tank with multiple leaves scattered across the substrate, you will notice shrimp spreading out and grazing independently rather than clustering in one spot, which is a sign of a healthy and confident colony.

Tannins are a natural compound released by many types of tropical leaves as they break down in water. They soften the water slightly, lower pH over time, and give the water a light amber tint that mimics the natural blackwater environments where many popular aquarium species originate. Bettas, small tetras, and most freshwater shrimp species come from waterways rich in leaf litter and tannins, and their behavior and color often improve noticeably in water that reflects those conditions. Banana leaves are a gentler source of tannins than Indian almond leaves and produce a milder color shift, making them a good option for keepers who want some of the benefits without a heavy darkening of the water.

Rinse before placing in the tank. The leaves will initially float and sink within a day or two as they absorb water. Safe for all freshwater shrimp, bettas, small fish, and snails. Also works in humid terrariums as a natural floor covering and food source for isopods and other invertebrates. Store unused leaves in a dry place away from moisture.
