Press the suction cup against the inside of the glass at any height and the cup holds in place with the opening facing up, ready to hold a plant stem or a small rooted aquatic plant directly in the water column. It is most commonly used for pothos — a fast-growing houseplant whose roots can be submerged in aquarium water where they actively absorb nitrates and contribute to water quality while the leaves grow out over the top of the tank. The setup takes about two minutes: mount the cup near the waterline, push a pothos cutting through the opening so the stem sits in the water, and the roots will develop and spread into the tank on their own within a few weeks. Also works for propagating aquatic stem plants and holding individual plants in position while they establish roots in a new setup.

Pothos in aquariums has become one of the most popular low-effort water quality tools in the hobby, particularly in betta tanks and shrimp tanks where stable water parameters matter most. The plant pulls nitrates directly out of the water through its root system, which reduces how often water changes are needed and keeps the tank environment more stable between maintenance sessions. It also adds a natural trailing vine element above the waterline that most keepers find genuinely attractive, and it grows quickly enough that new cuttings can be taken regularly and started in additional cups around the tank.

Mount the cup at or just below the waterline so the stem sits in water but the leaves remain above the surface. Pothos leaves should never be submerged — only the roots and stem go into the water. Press the suction cup firmly against clean dry glass to set it securely and reattach after water changes if needed. Compatible with glass and acrylic aquariums. Safe for all freshwater fish, shrimp, and invertebrates.
